Theproteinencodedbythisgeneisamemberofthefibroblastgrowthfactor(FGF)family.FGFfamilymemberspossessbroadmitogenicandcellsurvivalactivitiesandareinvolvedinavarietyofbiologicalprocessesincludingembryonicdevelopment,cellgrowth,morphogenesis,tissuerepair,tumorgrowthandinvasion.Thisgenewasidentifiedbyitssimilaritywithmousefgf3/int-2,aproto-oncogeneactivatedinvirallyinducedmammarytumorsinthemouse.Frequentamplificationofthisgenehasbeenfoundinhumantumors,whichmaybeimportantforneoplastictransformationandtumorprogression.Studiesofthesimilargenesinmouseandchickensuggestedtheroleininnerearformation.
Function:Fibroblastgrowthfactors(FGFs)canstimulatetheproliferationofmesenchymal,epithelialandneuroectodermalcells.FGF3belongstotheheparinbindinggrowthfactorsfamily.MembersofthefamilyincludeAcidicFGF(alsoknownasaFGForFGF1),basicFGF(bFGForFGF2),FGF3(alsoknownasInt2)andFGF4(alsoknownashstorKaposiFGF).FGF4wasfirstrevealedtobeanoncoproteininKaposi'ssarcomacells.OtherfamilymembersincludeFGF5,FGF6,FGF7(keratinocytegrowthfactor,KGF),FGF8(AIGF),FGF9(GAF)andFGF10.FGF3isactivatedbyproviralinsertionofmousemammarytumorvirus(MMTV).FGF3isresponsibleformostofbreastmalignancies.
