Abstract:Inthispaper,wepresentanonlinecouplingofgelelectrophoresis(GE)andinductivelycoupledplasma-massspectrometry(ICP-MS)forthedeterminationofiodinespecies(iodideandiodate)inliquid(seawater)andaerosolsamples.Forthefirsttime,thisapproachisappliedtotheanalysisofsmallmolecules,andinitialsystematicinvestigationsrevealedthatthemigrationbehavioraswellasthedetectionsensitivitystronglydependsonthematrix(e.g.,highconcentrationsofchloride).Theseeffectscouldconsequentlyaffecttheaccuracyofanalyticalresults,sothattheyneedtobeconsideredfortheanalysisofrealsamples.Thetechniqueusedforquantificationisspecies-specificisotopedilutionanalysis(ssIDA),whichisamatrix-independentcalibrationmethodundercertainconditions.Wedemonstratethattheuseof129I-enrichediodideandiodateallowsthecorrectionoftheimpactofthematrixonboth,theelectrophoreticmigrationandthedetectionsensitivityoftheICP-MS.Afteroptimization,thiscouplingoffersanovelandalternativemethodintheanalysisofiodinecompoundsinvariousmatrices.Here,wedemonstratetheanalyticalcapABIlityofthetechniqueforthechemicalcharacterizationofmarineaerosols.Theresultsshowthepresenceofiodideandiodateatthengm-3andsub-ngm-3levelintheinvestigatedaerosolsamples,whichweretakenatthecoastalresearchstationinMaceHead,Ireland.Theseresultsareingoodagreementwithotherrecentstudies,whichdemonstratedthattheiodinechemistryinthemarineatmosphereisonlypoorlyunderstood.Inadditiontoiodideandiodate,anotheriodinecompoundcouldbeseparatedanddetectedincertainsampleswithhightotaliodineconcentrationsandwasidentifiedaselementaliodine,probablyinformoftriiodide,bypeakmatching.However,itmayarisefromanartifactduringsamplepreparation.
