IL-17（白细胞介素-17），最初由Rouvier等人鉴定为来自啮齿动物T细胞杂交瘤的转录物。1993年，是一组称为IL-17家族的细胞因子的创始成员。在啮齿动物中称为CTLA8，IL-17显示出与由T-淋巴细菌性rhADInovirus疱疹病毒saimiri的开放阅读框编码的病毒IL-17高度同源。小鼠IL-17与大鼠具有85％的氨基酸序列同源性。白细胞介素17是一种细胞因子，通过增加各种组织中的趋化因子产生，将单核细胞和嗜中性粒细胞募集到炎症部位，作为延迟型反应的有效介质，类似于干扰素γ。IL-17由T辅助细胞产生并由IL-23诱导，其导致延迟型反应中的破坏性组织损伤。白细胞介素17作为一个家族起着促炎细胞因子的作用，它可以通过细胞外病原体对免疫系统的侵袭作出反应，并诱导病原体细胞基质的破坏。白细胞介素17与肿瘤坏死因子和白细胞介素-1协同作用。为了引发其功能，IL-17结合称为IL-17R的I型细胞表面受体，其中存在至少三种变体IL17RA，IL17RB和IL17RC。
