Description
Octanoyl-DL-carnitin chloride is an intermediate detergent which functions as a Brønsted acid and film-forming compound in chemical research. It’s identified as a hydrochloride and O-acylcarnitine, capable of inhibiting carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase.
Acylcarnitines interfere with the exchange system of mitochondrial carnitine and acylcarnitine; they can thus inhibit long chain fatty acid oxidation. Neonatal blood screens for (±)-Octanoylcarnitine are conducted as a standard check for accumulation, a condition associated with medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency and SIDS risk.
