Voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCC) are multi-subunit membrane complexes that allow depolarization-induced calcium influx into cells. The opening and closing of these channels by depolarizing stimuli allows calcium ions to enter neurons producing transient intracellular Ca2+ signals. VDCCs are formed as a complex of several different subunits: alfa1, alfa2delta, beta1-4, and gamma. The alfa1 subunit forms the ion conducting pore. The beta subunit contributes to the function of the calcium channel. Specifically, the beta-3 subunit regulates activation and inactivation of the channels through phosphorylation. The beta-3 subunit is most prevalent in the brain but it can also be found in the lungs, heart, aorta, trachea and pancreatic islets.
