Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is a virus mainly affecting dogs, leading to a highly contagious and potentially lethal disease, and is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their feces. While CPV will not infect humans, it poses serious health risks for dogs. The disease can occur all year around, although is most common in winter and spring. It has two distinct presentations, an intestinal and a cardiac form. The intestinal form is common for puppies of 3-4 months old, and is initially marked by elevated body temperature, poor spirits and appetite, and vomiting. Subsequently, the virus can cause destruction of the intestinal crypts, so that anaerobic bacteria that normally reside in the intestines can then cross into the bloodstream, leading to sepsis. The most common bacteria involved in severe cases are Clostridia, Campylobacter and Salmonella species. This can further lead to a syndrome known as systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), resulting in coma and quick death of the infected dogs. The cardiac form causes respiratory or cardiovascular failure in younger puppies (most commonly 4-6 weeks old), as well as light vomiting and diarrhea. Treatment often involves veterinary hospitalization. Vaccines can prevent this infection, but mortality can reach 91% in untreated cases.
